Nothing beats a smoothie in the early days of January; after weeks of indulgence the zesty freshness of fruit and veg is always welcome! This smoothie recipe uses some of the best foods of the season – including blood orange and beetroot. Add some freshly grated ginger if you want to give it a bit of a kick. Drink and feel virtuous. . .

1 medium beetroot, grated

3 medium blood oranges

1 medium ripe avocado

1 tbsp honey

1 tbsp vanilla extract

  1. Scrub the beetroot and slice into quarters or grate if you don’t have a high powered blender.
  2. Peel the blood oranges, half crossways and remove any pips.
  3. Halve the avocado and scoop out the flesh.
  4. Add the flesh of the blood oranges and avocado, the beetroot, honey, vanilla extract and about 250ml of water to the blender.
  5. Blend until smooth.
